Global Logistics

The new book by Philippe-Pierre Dornier and Michel Fender, «  Global Logistics » (520 pages) published by Éditions d’Organisation

Summary

Since its identification as a strategic lever of action, and as a management domain in a league of its own, logistics has structured itself from an organizational point of view, taking into consideration the management tools used according to a certain number of now well-known classical models.  However, close observation in the field of dynamic treatment of flow reveals a whole set of evolutions: the importance of the notion of service, information systems, outsourcing, frequent redesign of logistics systems, growth of counter- flow

This work sets out, on the one hand, to identify the fundamental reasons for such transformations and on the other hand, to reveal the themes according to which a new logistics model is emerging.

After observing numerous companies and intensely studying each case (Michelin, Yoplait, LASCAD-l'Oréal, Metro, Tailleur Industrie, ESSILOR…), two main families of logistics destabilization factors have been identified  : the factors of upstream logistics destabilization concern essentially changes in industrial strategy (delocalization, specialization of production units, just-in-time systems, post and pre-manufacturing) while the factors of downstream logistics destabilization concern the transformation of distribution channel performance (phenomenon of de-synchronization of sell-in and sell out, association of the logistics dimension with purchasing strategies, evolution of the commercial strategies of distributors).
